But in a handful of specific environments, uncontrolled static discharge can damage sensitive equipment, corrupt data, or create a safety risk — and that's where ESD (electrostatic discharge) or anti-static flooring becomes a genuine requirement rather than a nice-to-have.
What ESD Flooring Actually Does
ESD and static-dissipative flooring systems, such as Solidflow SL ESD, are formulated with conductive components that allow static charge to dissipate safely into the substrate rather than building up and discharging suddenly — for example, through a person touching sensitive electronic equipment.
Environments That Typically Need It
Electronics assembly and testing facilities, server rooms and data centres, laboratories handling sensitive instrumentation, and certain pharmaceutical or manufacturing environments are the most common settings where ESD flooring is specified. If your operation handles static-sensitive components or equipment, this is worth raising with your facility or IT team early in a fit-out or renovation.
ESD Flooring Is a System, Not Just a Coating
A genuine ESD floor isn't just about the topcoat — it typically requires a correctly prepared substrate, a conductive or dissipative underlayer, grounding points connected to the building's earthing system, and a compliant topcoat. Getting the full system right matters more than the finish colour or texture. If ESD performance needs to meet a specific standard for your industry, this must be confirmed and specified before installation, and tested once installed.
Not the Same as Anti-Slip or Chemical Resistance
ESD performance is a distinct property from slip resistance, chemical resistance, or general durability. A floor can be excellent in one respect and unsuitable in another — which is why it's worth being specific about every performance requirement for the space, not just the most obvious one.
