Tiles themselves are not waterproof — the grout lines between them let moisture through, and over time even a well-installed tiled surface will pass water into whatever is underneath. In a bathroom, shower, or any other wet area, that "whatever is underneath" is usually a screed or slab sitting above a ceiling, a neighbouring room, or a structural slab. Waterproofing before tiling is what actually stops that moisture from becoming a problem — the tile is just the visible finish.
Why This Step Gets Skipped
Waterproofing membrane is invisible once the tiles go down, so it's an easy step to under-specify or rush — nobody sees it in the finished room, and a shortcut here won't show up as a problem on handover day. It usually shows up months or years later, as a damp patch on a ceiling below, a musty smell, or tiles that start lifting from moisture trapped underneath. By then the fix means removing tiles, not just adding a coat of membrane.
Where Waterproofing Actually Matters Most
Full-room tanking (waterproofing the entire floor and lower walls) isn't always necessary, but certain areas need it regardless of the overall approach: the shower floor and walls to at least standard splash height, the floor-to-wall junction all the way around the room, any floor waste or drain penetration, and any junction where a wet floor meets a doorway or dry area. These junctions and penetrations are where the large majority of real-world waterproofing failures actually occur — not in the middle of an open floor.
Systems Used for Wet-Area Waterproofing

Falls and Drainage Still Matter
Waterproofing membrane doesn't fix a floor that doesn't drain properly. The screed beneath a shower or wet room floor needs the correct fall towards the floor waste before waterproofing is applied — get this wrong and water will pond on the membrane instead of draining away, which shortens the life of everything above it, tile included.
Confirm This Before Tiling Starts
Waterproofing needs to be complete, cured, and ideally flood-tested before tiling begins — once tiles are down, checking for a leak means removing them again. If you're a contractor or homeowner planning a bathroom or wet-area renovation, raise waterproofing as its own line item in the project, not an assumed inclusion under "tiling."
